What is West GA Idol?

West Georgia Idol is a singing contest held annually as a fundraiser in Hogansville, Georgia. The contest is organized as a series of concerts held in July. Audience members are treated to a series of vocal performances by contestants and to commentary by a distinguished panel of judges. In addition to gaining valuable experience, performers compete for a top prize of $1,000 cash!

Who Can Enter?

The West Georgia Idol contest is open to all vocal performers aged 14 years and above. Residence in the West Georgia area is not a requirement. There is an entry fee of $60, which covers up to four performances, if the performer advances all the way to the finals. (All proceeds from the contest go to a non-profit organization.)

What Can I Win?

The final winner of the West Georgia Idol contest receives a $1,000 cash prize! The Judges’ runner-up second place winner will receive a $500 cash prize. In addition, audience members vote for a People’s Choice winner, who will also win $500 cash. Even if you are not the final West Georgia Idol winner, you can still expect to gain a lot from the experience of performing in front of an audience and receiving feedback from a professional panel of judges.

Where and When Are The Performances Held?

The West Georgia Idol series of performances is held in the historic Hogansville Amphitheater in the small town of Hogansville, GA, home to friendly people, a historic downtown, and a community that is supportive of the arts. Hogansville is centrally located in the West Central Georgia area, in Troup County, near I-85 between Newnan and LaGrange. See the location page for a map of the area. Performances begin at 6:00 PM and last until all contestants have performed. Audience members are encouraged to come early for the best seating. Cost of admission is $5.00 per night (no charge for contestants).

How Much Experience Do I Need?

No experience required! For many contestants, the West Georgia Idol contest itself is the first step in the process of gaining experience as a vocal performer. Some contestants do have professional training and some professional experience, but everyone has a chance to win. The judges base their decisions on the performances held during the contest.

What Style of Music Can I Sing?

All musical styles are welcome, though judges generally recommend choosing songs that accentuate the singer’s personal vocal and performance style. Choose songs that you love, and make them your own. If you are covering a song that was written by someone else, spice it up with your own personality and style. Audiences and judges alike enjoy a heartfelt performance that showcases the singer’s abilities — not just to sing but to entertain as well! For each performance, the singer may provide background music on a CD, provide their own accompaniment (e.g. a guitar), or use other light accompaniment.

Who Are the Judges?

West Georgia Idol strives to assemble a distinguished panel of judges who have a variety of experience in the music business and related industries, including voice teachers, talent agents, club owners, recording engineers, and fellow performers. As the judges for the 2013 contest are announced, we will update the judges page.
